History of Brooklyn Park

Most of the original settlers in Brooklyn Park came out of Michigan. The town government was formally organized in 1858, and the community was named for the settlers’ hometown of Brooklyn, Michigan. Brooklyn Park was formerly known as Brooklyn Township; however, the township split in 1911 when the southeast community was incorporated into Brooklyn Center. Brooklyn Township was incorporated as the Village of Brooklyn Park in 1954, and it was incorporated as a city in 1969.

The Mississippi River forms the eastern boundary of the city, which separates it from the suburbs of Coon Rapids and Fridley in Anoka County. Brooklyn Park is known as “Tree City USA” and is home to 47 miles of trails and 67 parks, such as Rush Creek Regional Trail and the northern section of Palmer Lake Park. The city is also famous for the West Coon Rapids Dam, which is located on the west side of the Mississippi River. From 1991 through 1995, WWE Hall of Fame wrestler, Jesse Ventura, served as mayor of Brooklyn Park. In 1998, he was elected governor of Minnesota and served from 1999 through 2003.
